About this time of the year – one year ago, i was writing about TYPO3’s market share. Back then i took some criticism, being accused of comparing apples to oranges. Obviously i was curious again how the numbers evolved and despite of the criticism i will do this again.

Yes it’s true, TYPO3 is not a regular CMS but rather an Enterprise CMS but for the majority of people its still a CMS and its being treated as such. One important reason why i do this again is that the data reflects not only the CMS market but the overall market of all websites monitored by W3Techs (the source of the data) and also for the breakdown of the different TYPO3 versions.

Let’s start with the overall market:

(source)

From this data we can see that 70.9% of the websites use no CMS at all (at least its not detectable that they’re using one). This number decreased from 75.9%. So the logical conclusion would be that more and more companies and people are using some kind of a CMS on their website (grey is the overall market share and green is market share from the CMS market)

There aren’t any spectacular changes in the market shares of the different CMS’s, that’s why a graph with yearly change is not showing anything relevant. TYPO3 stays at a steady 0.6% of overall market share and lost a little from the CMS pie (which grew since last year). So we can say that TYPO3 did neither gain or lost market share since one year ago on the global website market.

If we look at the major version distributions of TYPO3 we can see:

(source)

There are still 1.2% of websites using TYPO3 version 3.x. That’s quite alot! Even if its half of what we had last year. These people really have to consider upgrading because running a version this old is a great security risk (no patches are available if some security vulnerabilities are discovered). One thing to note that TYPO3 v5 didn’t yet made it to this statistic although it seems there are a few sites made with v5.

Let’s see how the 4.x versions are doing:

(source)

That’s an interesting change. One year ago version 4.2 was first with 38.6%, now version 4.5 leads with 35.9%. This version is a Long Time Support version and its understandable that people will tend to use it more. Also this is the last one with IE6 support – although IE6 is practically dead some companies still use it.Versions 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 lost about about half of their percentage while 4.4 is almost at the same share.

Version 4.6 also popped up on the radar with 1.6%. That’s a good number taking into account that is relatively young (few months) and also requires PHP 5.3 which is not a default offering on the majority of webhosts.

I suggest you take this data with a grain of salt. W3Techs monitor lots of sites but probably they also miss a few. These statistics are here just to make an idea of where TYPO3 is.

Overall i think that is evolving slowly even if it didn’t gain market share in the last year. Good things happened. Version 4.6 was released with lots of improvements and 4.7 is on our doorsteps with much improved usability.

Well, that’s it. I hope in about one year we have better numbers.

Although a few months have passed since TYPO3 4.5 LTS was released, the TYPO3 teams are working hard to get all kinds of new and exciting stuff out for us. The TYPO3.org relaunch project was one of the highlights of this spring but it seems that the core package is also getting some new features and not surprisingly some new minimum requirements as announced in the TYPO3 4.6 Alpha 1 release announcement.

Its great to see that after ensuring that people will have a product that will be usable for many years (TYPO3 4.5 LTS) now the focus is in making a modern and future proof product. So starting with this alpha release all future TYPO3 packages will have these minimum requirements:

PHP 5.3: PHP 5.3.0 is quite widely available since almost two years. And with the latest versions it is actually usable in production. Also most web hosting companies are offering it now to users. So now, PHP 5.3.0 or above is now mandatory for TYPO3.

Safe mode: While still being supported by PHP 5.3 (but now it is deprecated), safe mode is not supported by TYPO3 anymore.

IE6: Finally! This ancient browser is not supported for the TYPO3 backend.

ImageMagick: Support for older ImageMagick versions like v4 and v5 has been dropped.ImageMagick v6 or GraphicsMagick is now mandatory.

TYPO3 4.6 is scheduled to be released in October 2011. You can see the features and the roadmap here and you can download the first alpha package from here.

One of these sites is W3Techs , a website which monitor lots of things and among other things they also monitor CMS software market shares. According to them TYPO3 is in the 6th place

(source)

From this graph we can see that 75.9% of the websites aren’t using any CMS. From those who use CMS, TYPO3 has a market share of 2.5% (0.6% from the global share including non-CMS websites).

The leading CMS is WordPress with more then half of the CMS installations being on this platform. Second is Joomla, which surprises me, Joomla in my opinion isn’t a too bright CMS, being plagued by security holes and the lack of free modules for it is annoying.Drupal comes in 3rd place, which surprises me again, i’ve been expecting Drupal on the second place. Certainly in my point of view Drupal is better then Joomla at any task.

Place 4 is taken by vBulletin which as i know it is mostly used for forums (although it has some CMS functions added recently – i don’t hink people use it for that purpose) and its place in the CMS category is open for discussion. Place 5 goes to Google’s Blogger, which again can be considered a CMS but in reality is a blogging platform which is pushed hard by Google and which isn’t offered for the users to download, modify, use.

If we go forward and analyze TYPO3 further we will see that there are still 2.3% of websites wich use version 3.x of TYPO3. That version is so ancient that i wonder how these people manage to keep their website up and running. TYPO3′s versions greater then 4 are used by 97.7% of the TYPO3 users.

(source)

If we further analyze this breakdown and see how the 4.x branch is doing, then we will have some little surprises.

(source)

It seems that more then one third of the TYPO3 4.x branch is ruled by versions 4.2.x and about 21% for 4.3.x and 4.4.x. This is bad news because the 4.2 branch support is being discontinued this month when TYPO3 4.5 LTS (Long Term Support) appears. Users running TYPO3 4.2.x will need to upgrade soon in order to have their versions supported. This is also valid for the 14.5% who use TYPO3 4.1.x which is obsolete and not supported since last july and users of the 4.0.x branch which is not supported for more then a year. You can see the TYPO3 support matrix here

Overall TYPO3 could do better, and will do better. Version 4.5 will be Long Term Support and probably many people are just waiting for this version to appear and will be upgrading to it. Now that TYPO3 has an Introduction Package that makes learning TYPO3 easier and the availability of the TYPO3 Distributions should bolster the adoption among people who didn’t used it before.

Meantime i will be continuing to monitor TYPO3′s market share and plan to provide a report on this blog every six months about the TYPO3′s market share and the evolution of the market share.

What is your opinion on this data ? How do you think that TYPO3 usage can be increased ?

Today the newest version of TYPO3 has been released. Version 4.4 comes with lots of new features and it aims to bring TYPO3 closer to new developers making the learning and starting a website of a new website easier.

For this an Introduction Package has been created that will allow those who are not familiar with TYPO3 to have a functional website in minutes, just by installing TYPO3 with the bundled Introduction Package and start customizing the provided extension and templates.

Among other things we notice the following features and improvements:

An updated look&feel of the TYPO3 backend

An improved installer

Faster Rich Text Editor

A new task center

To read the full announcement head over to the TYPO3 website where you can also download the newest release to get started with this new TYPO3 version.

This is a long awaited release not because of the time it took to be released but because of the Introduction Package (Actually it took only about half a year from previous release). TYPO3 needed to catch up with other content management systems where once you installed the CMS you had a functional website you could start tinkering with. This lack of a functional example alienated many potential developers who looked for other “working” alternatives. Everyone was complaining that TYPO3 gives an “error” when installed the first time. And if you had no idea about Typoscript and templates you were stuck and it was very hard to go forward with implementing a site. Now it become easier to get started and i think TYPO3 adoption will increase in time. Maybe not spectacularly but the gains will be noticeable. And be prepared for a new announcement on this website in the following weeks, an announcement that will make TYPO3 even more appealing to all developers, beginners or more experienced.

I’ve given TYPO3 4.4 beta3 a test spin these days. I have to say that this is a major improvement over previous TYPO3 releases. First of all the look & feel of the backend is completely changed. It looks different but it works the same way. And i didn’t made any measurements but i have the impression that it moves somewhat faster then the old one. The Install Tool is also changed and now has an updated look and functionality.

The introduction package that comes with TYPO3 4.4 is a big step forward. What is the introduction package ? It’s in fact a website that comes packaged with TYPO3 and its ready to use out of the box. This was one of the major complaints regarding TYPO3, if you just installed the platform it gave you an error by default (no content). Now it provides an out of the box website which is ready to use or fine tune. I think this will enable more users to be able to utilize TYPO3. Because until now you had to do some configurations, had to write typoscript and so on. Now you just install it and use it. Maybe you change the layout by adjusting CSS but that’s not a big deal.

The target release date for TYPO3 4.4 is 22 June. I’m looking forward to see it released and used in production.

Some of you might already know that the TYPO3 community released today the second beta of the upcoming TYPO3 4.4 version.

What’s new in this release:

1-2-3 Installer with DBAL enabled

Reorganized CSS files in the Backend

CSS and Javascript Concatenator and Compressor

Backend Debug Bar

Updated Fluid and Extbase versions

If the current target date of 22 June 2010 is respected with the release of the final version of TYPO3 4.4 this will be the shortest time between two TYPO3 versions from the 4.x branch. For comparation you can see the release dates of previous versions below and the expected date of the 4.4 version:

Release history of the 4.x versions

TYPO3 4.0 : 2006-04-07

TYPO3 4.1 : 2007-03-06

TYPO3 4.2 : 2008-04-23

TYPO3 4.3 : 2009-11-30

TYPO3 4.4 : 2010-06-22 (expected)

I can hardly wait to see what is after 4.4 regarding the features introduced. Because right now, there are some things that are really missing and slowing down TYPO3 adoption among newbies. I receive numerous complaints from developers who are just starting to learn that TYPO3 is hard to learn and has no out of the box functionality. Sure, experienced developers like us are not intimidated by this, but for newbies this is a real problem.

Being an Enterprise level CMS, TYPO3 is not targeted at “click-next-finish” developers, that’s sure. But it would certainly help increasing the popularity of this wonderful CMS if it would have at least some out of the box functionality.
