About this time of the year – one year ago, i was writing about TYPO3’s market share. Back then i took some criticism, being accused of comparing apples to oranges. Obviously i was curious again how the numbers evolved and despite of the criticism i will do this again.

Yes it’s true, TYPO3 is not a regular CMS but rather an Enterprise CMS but for the majority of people its still a CMS and its being treated as such. One important reason why i do this again is that the data reflects not only the CMS market but the overall market of all websites monitored by W3Techs (the source of the data) and also for the breakdown of the different TYPO3 versions.

Let’s start with the overall market:

(source)

From this data we can see that 70.9% of the websites use no CMS at all (at least its not detectable that they’re using one). This number decreased from 75.9%. So the logical conclusion would be that more and more companies and people are using some kind of a CMS on their website (grey is the overall market share and green is market share from the CMS market)

There aren’t any spectacular changes in the market shares of the different CMS’s, that’s why a graph with yearly change is not showing anything relevant. TYPO3 stays at a steady 0.6% of overall market share and lost a little from the CMS pie (which grew since last year). So we can say that TYPO3 did neither gain or lost market share since one year ago on the global website market.

If we look at the major version distributions of TYPO3 we can see:

(source)

There are still 1.2% of websites using TYPO3 version 3.x. That’s quite alot! Even if its half of what we had last year. These people really have to consider upgrading because running a version this old is a great security risk (no patches are available if some security vulnerabilities are discovered). One thing to note that TYPO3 v5 didn’t yet made it to this statistic although it seems there are a few sites made with v5.

Let’s see how the 4.x versions are doing:

(source)

That’s an interesting change. One year ago version 4.2 was first with 38.6%, now version 4.5 leads with 35.9%. This version is a Long Time Support version and its understandable that people will tend to use it more. Also this is the last one with IE6 support – although IE6 is practically dead some companies still use it.Versions 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 lost about about half of their percentage while 4.4 is almost at the same share.

Version 4.6 also popped up on the radar with 1.6%. That’s a good number taking into account that is relatively young (few months) and also requires PHP 5.3 which is not a default offering on the majority of webhosts.

I suggest you take this data with a grain of salt. W3Techs monitor lots of sites but probably they also miss a few. These statistics are here just to make an idea of where TYPO3 is.

Overall i think that is evolving slowly even if it didn’t gain market share in the last year. Good things happened. Version 4.6 was released with lots of improvements and 4.7 is on our doorsteps with much improved usability.

Well, that’s it. I hope in about one year we have better numbers.

Have you ever wondered how much is TYPO3′s share in the CMS market? Well, i did. And if you didn’t know there are some websites that have these statistics and they update them near real time.

One of these sites is W3Techs , a website which monitor lots of things and among other things they also monitor CMS software market shares. According to them TYPO3 is in the 6th place

(source)

From this graph we can see that 75.9% of the websites aren’t using any CMS. From those who use CMS, TYPO3 has a market share of 2.5% (0.6% from the global share including non-CMS websites).

The leading CMS is WordPress with more then half of the CMS installations being on this platform. Second is Joomla, which surprises me, Joomla in my opinion isn’t a too bright CMS, being plagued by security holes and the lack of free modules for it is annoying.Drupal comes in 3rd place, which surprises me again, i’ve been expecting Drupal on the second place. Certainly in my point of view Drupal is better then Joomla at any task.

Place 4 is taken by vBulletin which as i know it is mostly used for forums (although it has some CMS functions added recently – i don’t hink people use it for that purpose) and its place in the CMS category is open for discussion. Place 5 goes to Google’s Blogger, which again can be considered a CMS but in reality is a blogging platform which is pushed hard by Google and which isn’t offered for the users to download, modify, use.

If we go forward and analyze TYPO3 further we will see that there are still 2.3% of websites wich use version 3.x of TYPO3. That version is so ancient that i wonder how these people manage to keep their website up and running. TYPO3′s versions greater then 4 are used by 97.7% of the TYPO3 users.

(source)

If we further analyze this breakdown and see how the 4.x branch is doing, then we will have some little surprises.

(source)

It seems that more then one third of the TYPO3 4.x branch is ruled by versions 4.2.x and about 21% for 4.3.x and 4.4.x. This is bad news because the 4.2 branch support is being discontinued this month when TYPO3 4.5 LTS (Long Term Support) appears. Users running TYPO3 4.2.x will need to upgrade soon in order to have their versions supported. This is also valid for the 14.5% who use TYPO3 4.1.x which is obsolete and not supported since last july and users of the 4.0.x branch which is not supported for more then a year. You can see the TYPO3 support matrix here

Overall TYPO3 could do better, and will do better. Version 4.5 will be Long Term Support and probably many people are just waiting for this version to appear and will be upgrading to it. Now that TYPO3 has an Introduction Package that makes learning TYPO3 easier and the availability of the TYPO3 Distributions should bolster the adoption among people who didn’t used it before.

Meantime i will be continuing to monitor TYPO3′s market share and plan to provide a report on this blog every six months about the TYPO3′s market share and the evolution of the market share.

What is your opinion on this data ? How do you think that TYPO3 usage can be increased ?

The book has some interesting subjects like:

- How can you explore all kinds of Web services and integrate them with Drupal.

- Successfully reuse the applications without the need to do the coding again by using the Web services on the existing Drupal site.

- Allow your Drupal site to consume all kinds of web services by using contributed Drupal modules for these specific tasks or applications.

- Publish your Drupal site’s content to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn using Drupal Web services

- Share content and resources between your applications and machines even if they are running different platforms and architectures.

You can buy the book in printed or ebook format from here

We’ve just returned from DrupalCamp Timisoara, the first ever romanian DrupalCamp. Although most of the presentations were already familiar subjects to me, i’ve met some interesting people during these two days and learned a few new things too.

The event started friday evening with a social gathering at Club Porto Arte in Timisoara where we had a few beers and get to know each other. Saturday morning the first romanian DrupalCamp started with the opening session by Claudiu Cristea (president of Drupal Romania Association). I will make a short recap of all the sessions and my opinion on them:

OpenMap – OpenLayers and Drupal – presented by Mihai Fratu. It could have been a good presentation but i think it should have been more thorough. Still it was an interesting – especially because i’m interested in mapping applications of all kinds.

Eat your own dog food! Why you should use Open Atrium to manage your projects – presented by Kristof Van Tomme. I already saw this presentation at DrupalCamp Prague so it didn’t bring much novelty but i think it was a little bit different then the Prague presentation although i’m not sure. Kristof is one of the participants who knows how to make a presentation and how to focus the audience’s attention.

Building a Drupal module with Flex – presented by Mihai Corlan (platform evangelist at Adobe). It was one of the most controversial presentations with many, many questions. Obviously everyone came up with the regular questions: will HTML5 kill Flash, why Flash doesn’t run on the iPhone and such. But Mihai replied very well and made a good impression.

The Agile Road – presented by Maria Diaconu and Alexandru Bolboaca. I expected more from this presentation. It was in myy opinion superficial and touched only generalities.

Drupal for Higher Education and Virtual Learning – presented by Gabriel Dragomir. This was among the few things that were unknown to me and i learned about them in this DrupalCamp. Its quite interesting that Drupal became a tool in all kinds of areas, including academic insitutions and research.

Come for the software, stay for the community – how Drupal improves and evolves – presented by Gábor Hojtsy. This is a presentation that in some form or another i’ve remember seeing in Prague but not under this name. Its the usual community building and Drupal promoting presentation (as Gábor put it: making noise about what you do).

Drupal Search on steroids using Apache Solr - presented by Andrei Savu. This was too short of a presentation for such a good and interesting subject. I guess it could have been made a little bit more comprehensive and interesting.

Publish and Subscribe – presented by Alexandru Badiu. It was an interesting presentation. I was somewhat familiar with the concept but the author managed to enlighten me even more.

These were the presentations from the first day. In the evening people went to Club Porto Arte were a folk band entertained the drupelers and of course many beers were consumed. The second day’s presentations were:

Using Features – presented by Alexandru Badiu. Features was the most useful presentation for people working with constant changes on multiple servers (development – staging – live). And i think the presentation made a good case for using Features in every circumstance that requires such constant changes.

Tips and tricks for building Entreprise / Large web applications with Drupal – presented by Mihai Ceusan and one more guy (unfortunately i can’t remember the name and he isn’t in the schedule). This presentation was the one i expected the most. It was somewhat useful but i expected more from this one too. They presented their problems with deploying and changing a very high number of sites. I was expecting tips&tricks on how to fine tune a Drupal site to work under very heavy load.

What’s up with Drupal 7 – presented by Gábor Hojtsy. I saw this one too at Prague. I guess for people not familiar with Drupal 7 features it was quite interesting. Gábor is a good presenter and knows how to make people interested in something – in this case Drupal 7

DBTNG – presented by Tamás Demeter (unfortunately i missed this presentation due to objective reasons)

Ubercart-powered online concept store – presented by Vlad Socaciu. Ubercart is the solution for powering online stores in Drupal. The author tried to present the features of this great module but there were some minor technical glitches that prevented viewers to see the screen in good conditions. But still it was useful.

Drupal distributed architecture: the stuff that clouds are made off – presented by Kristof Van Tomme. Clouds are the buzzword of our era. Everyone wants in the cloud and as sites get bigger and bigger Drupal is heading into the cloud as well. Kristof’s presentation explained some of the notions involved and showed how Drupal can work in distributed environments.

There were two more presentations one about Building more active (euro) regional communities (by Radu Ticiu) and See you in Copenhagen but we had to leave for home as a long journey expected us.

Overall it was a good event, with lots of fun and lots of Drupal, also Timisoara is a great city so it certainly was a good experience.

Recently i received another Packt Publishing book, this time with Drupal as the subject. The title of the book is Drupal 6 Performance Tips and i found it to be a very good and helpful companion anytime you need to fine-tune a Drupal installation for heavy traffic sites.

The book is written by Trevor James and TJ Holowaychuk, both of the authors being experienced web developers with quite a few projects behind. Drupal 6 Performance Tips is structured into 9 chapters, each dealing with a specific task of optimization or enhancement.

The first chapter is dedicated to the process of upgrading Drupal, most importantly the book deals with upgrading Drupal from versions 5.x, a subject that is quite interesting to many of you.

The second chapter deals with the maintaining of your Drupal site. From caching to cron and from cleaning up files to tweaking .htaccess you can find many useful tips in this chapter.

Speaking of useful tips, in the third chapter developers can get quite a few tips on using development modules and tools. This is a must read for every beginner developer but experienced developers can learn a few things too.

Chapters 4,5 and 6 have performance in focus. The authors offer performance optimization advices and teach you how to use the DB Maintenance module, the Throttle module, the Boost module and the Advanced Boost module.

The seventh chapter is especially interesting as it deals with using Memcache API and integration. This is an exhaustive guide that deals with everything, from installing Memcached libraries and service to more advanced subjects such as running memcache without saving cache to the database.

Chapter 8 is for tips on Advanced Caching techniques, this chapter deals with Authenticated User Page Caching (Authcache) among other things, so it is very handy when you have quite a lot of pages that needs to be served to authenticated users.

The last chapter, chapter 9 is dedicated to Drupal Multisite configuration and performance. How to set up multiple websites on the same Drupal installation is explained in a detailed manner and also examples are presented.

Without doubt this book is a must have for people who are working on high traffic websites and who care about the performance of their site. And everyone should care about the performance of the site because bad performance can not only hurt you financially (more servers needed) but can drive away your visitors and Google’s bots (yes, recently Google announced that site speed is a factor in ranking of the websites).
