So starting with this year i will publish a post with these articles every week on thursday. This way i can find them when i need them and also maybe some of you can find something interesting to read among them.

The order is arbitrary and some of the articles may be older then one week. The fact is that i read them this week so they get mentioned here this week.

Interesting articles this week:

MySQL : Using IF in a WHERE clause – published by electrictoolbox.com, although not a good solution – an IF is possible in a WHERE clause and i post this here only for reference – i not recommend using such solutions

Dive into HTML 5 – published by diveintohtml5.org, HTML 5 is here and this is a fairly good intro in it

jQuery has a nice function called getJSON() which performs a GET requests to a url and parses the result to a JSON object. But what if you want to do a POST request instead of a GET request. This is specially useful if you have very long strings that might break the GET request.

jQuery has no postJSON function so you will have to find another way. But there is a solution!

You can use the regular post function: jQuery.post( url, [data], [callback] , [type]) specifing the last parameter [type] to be “json”.

Here is the complete example:

var callback = function (returndata, status) {
//here you can do whatever you want with the returndata object
};

jQuery.post( url, {mydata: mydata, mydata1: mydata1}, callback, "json") ;

You can send any number of parameters to that url. The parameters are marked with italic mydata, mydata1
I hope this helps

A while ago i wanted to build a functionality where some blocks of html had to be sortable (with drag and drop). After searching a little i found jQuery’s Sortable plugin. With the help of this nice little plugin i could build the functionality i required in no time. I will show you below how to do it if you need to do this yourself.

For start we need jQuery, ui.core and ui.sortable, make sure you download them and include them in the header of your application:

after that we use this little code snippet to make the magic:

In the html we have a div with the class thelist, this is the div that contains the sortable elements, each having a unique id.

Item 1

Item 2

Item 3

Item 4

Item 5

After each drag and drop operation in load.php will receive a string with the order of the divs, the result will be something like this:

el[]=3&el[]=4&el[]=5&el[]=2&el[]=1

This data is sent to load.php with POST, beeing contained in the list variable: $_POST['list']

This is only a basic demonstration, you can do much advanced functionality with jQuery Sortable, you just need a little time and a little coffee.

I’ve found a great article on the topic of tracking clicks and creating a clickmap using PHP and jQuery. The article explains how to

Record the X and Y coordinates of the mouse cursor when it is clicked on a web page.

Save those coordinates to a database

When called, display a “clickmap” on top of the web page visually displaying the locations of those clicks.

The results are amazing, check it out here. This thing could be used to track clicks in any webpage and use this stuff in marketing or usability studies.

Lately i was working on a new project using Drupal 6 and jQuery. Drupal is entirely new for me, although i was aware of its success i never used it in a project. So i had to learn the quirks of this CMS from somewhere. And after digging through the online libraries i’ve found 3 great books that helped me alot understanding and learning about Drupal. These 3 books are:

Pro Drupal Development – Second edition by John K. VanDyk , published by Apress, 2008

Building powerful and robust websites with Drupal 6, by David Mercer, published by Packt Publishing, March 2008

Learning Drupal 6 module developement, by Matt Butcher, published by Packt Publishing, May 2008

So this was the first part of the task. I also needed to learn jQuery quickly. The website i am working on its full of Ajax and all kinds of effects like drag and drop and so on. So for learning quickly jQuery you should read:

jQuery in Action – by Bear Bibault and Yehuda Katz, published by Manning, 2008

jQuery Reference Guide – by Jonathan Chaffer and Karl Swedberg, published by Packt Publishing, August 2007

Learning jQuery – by Jonathan Chaffer and Karl Swedberg, published by Packt Publishing, June 2007

These books helped me alot, but if you want to learn you also need to read documentation on the website of these wonderful projects Drupal.org and jQuery.com
