Just last year i was thanking my hosting provider Servint for their great service and regular upgrades on their infrastructure. Upgrades that are greatly valued by us – the customers. Now its time for another round of great news from Servint. They have completed the largest VPS RAM, disk space and processing power upgrade in their history and thanks to that my VPS now has more RAM more disk space and more processing power then ever.

Last year i had an Essential VPS, now i’m on a Signature which means that i have 90 GB of storage, 1.5 TB monthly transfer, 2 GB guaranteed (4 GB burst) RAM. If you’re interested then you can consult the full product matrix here.

This upgrade means that my websites should load faster and/or i can host more websites. I was already contemplating on a few new websites and i think this upgrade comes just in the right time and gives me a push to go ahead and build them.

P.S.

If you are interested in hosting a website but you are not yet ready for renting a full VPS then let me know and maybe i find a little spot for your website on this upgraded VPS. If you have a non profit organization/cause or if you’re a person/organization from my hometown Covasna and you’re not building the next Youtube then i will host your website free of charge.

I have a paid storage plan at Google which until now featured 10 GB extra storage for 20$ a year. I use it mostly for private (protected) Picasa Photos but its nice to know that my Gmail account has an overflow capacity too.

Google announced today that they will upgrade the paid storage plans because in time the cost of hard drive storage has continued to drop. So my 10 GB’s have been transformed to 80 GB of online storage. That’s for only 20$ a year. Isn’t that cool ? For now i only use like half a gigabyte but i will start uploading tons of photos. Its very convenient to have all the photos online because its less likely to loose them and you can view them them from any computer wherever you are.

And if we speak about this storage upgrade, i must say i think that Google prepares for the much anticipated GDrive with this move. Its only a matter of time before the storage space will be implemented on all Google services, including the ones that have a potential for this service, like Google Docs. So most people will need to sign-up for a storage plan if they intend to store large amount of data at Google.

New storage plans:

I’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.8 (Chet Baker). I think i never experienced such a smooth upgrade to a new version of a web application. When i logged in to the admin interface of my WordPress it just warned me that there is a new version and i should upgrade. Ok i clicked the warning entered the ftp password and after waiting around 3 minutes WordPress upgraded my blog to version 2.8. And this without ever leaving my admin backend or using any ftp program or something.

You may say that this is not such a big deal. And i may agree with you if we were talking about a desktop application. But for a web application it is important in my opinion. WordPress made running a blog a piece of cake and many people with no or little technical skills can run their own blog, upgrade it, install plugins and with version 2.8 they can install themes too without ever leaving their admin panel, without copying files, uploading to ftp and other things that usually discourage people.

Way to go. I’m waiting other CMS providers to take example from WordPress and come up with a similar solution.

Congrats, WordPress is becoming more and more robust and user friendly. Many others should take a notice!

I upgraded the blog today to WordPress 2.5.1 The upgrade process is really simple, you just copy the new files to the server overwriting the old files and then running wp-admin/upgrade.php. At least this should have been the ideal upgrade path. But when i finished the upgrade the server threw at me an Internal Server Error page and i couldn’t do anything. The solution for this problem is to delete the .htaccess file and then open the blog administration and update the permalinks settings (be sure to set it as it was in previous installation). After you update these settings, a new .htaccess is created and things work ok from this point.
